Safe Routes to School
Since 2012, the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program at CUSD has aimed to bring the community together to encourage and enable more students to walk and bike to school safely. SRTS includes encouragement events, education, and collaboration that support safer routes and infrastructure. These initiatives improve student health and well-being and reduce traffic congestion and pollution in our school communities.
- Encouragement events such as Walk & Roll to School: Students are encouraged to walk or bike to school.
- Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day: Students learn about Ruby Bridges in their classes and are encouraged to walk or bike to school.
Safe Routes to School also includes:
- Participation in school and community events, including free bike repair clinics and the distribution of safety literature and equipment, such as bike lights and helmets
- Pedestrian and bicycle safety education assemblies and workshops at schools
- Annual SRTS Student Travel Tallies and Parent/Caregiver Surveys
- Walk audits to assess bicycle and pedestrian safety and accessibility around schools
- Coordination with municipalities regarding pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure improvements
- SRTS grants for special projects and infrastructure, including bike racks for schools
Guidance and funding are provided by the San Mateo County Office of Education Safe Routes to School, which is funded by the City/County Association of Governments (C/CAG) of San Mateo County, the California Office of Traffic Safety, and the San Mateo County Transportation Authority.
